Our Role in the project

n SBFS, GRID-Arendal leads work on blue carbon ecosystems. It is responsible for establishing a virtual “Blue Carbon Hub Kenya”, a centre of excellence that brings together training, data, and storytelling on the value of mangroves and seagrasses. GRID supports KMFRI and partners in designing training modules, developing communication strategies, and producing knowledge products that highlight how blue carbon underpins both climate resilience and community livelihoods. GRID also helps link SBFS with regional and international initiatives, ensuring Kenya’s experiences contribute to wider global learning.
GRID’s strength lies in its ability to bridge science and society. For the Blue Carbon Hub Kenya, it provides the design, communication, and capacity-building tools that ensure the Hub reaches beyond researchers to policymakers, communities, and the private sector. Its history of working with UNEP and other global actors positions the Hub as an internationally recognised initiative. By bringing visibility and coherence to the project’s outputs, GRID helps ensure the Hub will live on as a lasting legacy of SBFS .
