Collaborating Partner – Norway

In the SBFS project, VI focuses on the safety and nutritional value of blue foods. It helps KMFRI and Kenyan laboratories strengthen their capacity to monitor contaminants, pathogens, and nutrient composition in fish and seaweed. VI provides training on disease surveillance in aquaculture systems, hatchery health management, and the establishment of laboratory standards for food safety. Its involvement ensures that Kenya’s growing aquaculture sector and fishery value chains meet both local and international standards.
For the Blue Carbon Hub Kenya, VI contributes by linking blue carbon conservation with human health and nutrition. By documenting the nutritional benefits of sustainably managed ecosystems, VI helps make the case for protecting mangroves and seagrasses not only as climate allies but also as sources of healthy food. This perspective ensures the Hub addresses the full spectrum of sustainability—from ecological restoration to safe and nutritious diets. VI’s long history of combining rigorous science with public health relevance makes it an indispensable partner.
